Pobalscoil Rosmini, a post primary school, is located on Grace Park Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 9, and is owned by the Department of Education & Skills (DoES). The site adjoins a campus managed by Child Vision Ireland on which St Joseph’s school for the visually impaired is located. Pupils graduate from St. Joseph’s to the Pobalscoil.
Pobalscoil Rosmini currently has 250 students, 100 of which have identified special needs including visual impairment, behavioural difficulties and multiple disabilities. Currently there are over 30 pupils with visual impairment within this group.
The main school building was constructed in the early 1980s, and was extended on two occasions with prefabricated accommodation, in a two storey block as the first extension and a single storey block c. 10-12 years ago.
In July 2013 as a result of flash flooding and damage to electrical systems, the school was fully relocated to temporary accommodation located in All Hallows and St Joseph’s School for the Visually Impaired, and the Rosmini school building is currently vacant. A major project is required at this school to address these and other issues which have caused the school to move out and so affecting the health and happiness of both students and staff.
Originally, the brief for this project was to get the school out of temporary accommodation and back to their current site as soon as possible either as a refurbishment and extension project or as a demolition and new build project. It was decided to move forward with the new build option. TOBIN were appointed by Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board to provide Civil and Structural design services for this project. The works include the following:
- The demolition of the existing school building.
- Construction of a new multi-storey school building and PE Hall.
- Provision of a new road network comprising dedicated entrance and exit points on Grace park Road.
Following completion of the above school project, the standards of educational facilities and amenities available to students in the area will have greatly improved, which will subsequently help promote Health and Happiness in the community; particularly those with special needs including visual impairment, behavioural difficulties and multiple disabilities.
