Aligning with Galway’s designation as the European Region of Gastronomy in 2018, the TOBIN-led BIA Innovator Campus was approved for development in Athenry, Co. Galway. TOBIN worked closely with the BIA Innovator Campus CLG Board to provide high-quality architectural and engineering design services, with a strong focus on health and safety.

The contractor’s scope included the construction of three buildings within a research and educational food complex, along with external car parking, access roads, site fencing, services, utilities, landscaping, and associated site works. The three units were developed on a greenfield site at the Teagasc Mellows Campus in Athenry.

Building 1 comprised food labs and office space, including a reception area, showcase room, demonstration auditorium, hot desk areas, culinary training centre, meeting rooms, offices, toilets, and ancillary areas. It also featured High Potential Start-Up (HPSU) and growth incubation units, consisting of four single-storey coworking food laboratories designed for food innovation and product development.

The remaining two buildings consisted of incubation units for start-up companies, incorporating food production areas, food stores, chill rooms, changing facilities, and other ancillary spaces.
