Spillway remedial works – Vartry Lower Reservoir

The original Vartry reservoir was completed in 1863 and has a capacity of 11.3 billion litres and a maximum depth of 18.3 metres. Historically the reservoir is the key source of Dublin city together with the Upper Reservoir which was completed in 1923. By highlighting the vital importance and considering the long age of the dam infrastructure remedial in critical asset structural parts are obvious for achieving high and modern safety standards.

In this light, Uisce Éireann in association with AECOM (designer), Córas Pipeline Services Ltd (contractor) and TOBIN (Residents engineers) has carried out remedial works at the old masonry ogee spillway (length of about 95). The works consisted of the removal of old shotcrete, slush grouting in the existing masonry surface, new reinforced toe beam upstream and downstream of the spill weir, new shotcrete pouring in the whole spill weir and new underground drainage pipes at the downstream ogee crest.

TOBIN senior personnel are involved as Resident Engineer/construction administration roles and construction supervision, providing daily supervision and covering a wider spectrum of challenging technical duties on site (effective communication between designer and contractor, HS review on a daily base, review as-built construction elements etc.)
